Belt Tensioners: A Small Part That Prevents Big Problems

When it comes to preventative maintenance, some of the most critical components are also the easiest to overlook. One of those is the belt tensioner. While it may seem like a small part, a failing belt tensioner can lead to major engine issues, unexpected downtime, and costly repairs if not addressed early.

At Boss Truck Shop, we see belt and tensioner issues regularly—and the good news is that many of them are preventable with routine inspections and timely service.

What Does a Belt Tensioner Do?

The belt tensioner maintains proper tension on the engine’s serpentine belt, which powers essential components such as the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor. If the belt tensioner isn’t doing its job, the belt can slip, wear unevenly, or fail entirely.

Why Belt Tensioners Matter

A worn or failing belt tensioner can cause:

  • Squealing or chirping noises
  • Belt slippage or misalignment
  • Overheating due to water pump inefficiency
  • Loss of charging power from the alternator
  • Sudden belt failure leading to roadside breakdowns

In fleet and heavy-duty applications, these failures don’t just cost money—they cost time, productivity, and reliability.

How to Inspect a Belt and Tensioner

Regular inspections can help catch problems early. During a visual and hands-on inspection, technicians look for:

  • Cracks, fraying, or glazing on the belt
  • Uneven belt wear, which may indicate misalignment
  • Weak or sticking tensioners
  • Excessive belt movement or slack
  • Noise or vibration during engine operation

Technicians may also manually check the tensioner arm for smooth movement and resistance. If it binds, feels loose, or doesn’t return properly, it’s likely time for replacement.

Measuring Tools & Professional Diagnostics

While visual checks are helpful, professional shops use specialized tools to measure belt wear and tension accurately. These tools ensure:

  • Proper belt tension within manufacturer specifications
  • Correct alignment across pulleys
  • Identification of issues not visible to the naked eye

This level of precision is especially important for heavy-duty trucks and equipment, where belts operate under higher loads and longer run times.

Preventative Maintenance = Fewer Breakdowns

Replacing a belt tensioner during scheduled maintenance is far more cost-effective than dealing with a roadside failure. Preventative service helps:

  • Extend belt life
  • Protect engine-driven components
  • Reduce unexpected downtime
  • Improve overall vehicle reliability

At Boss Truck Shop, we focus on preventative maintenance because it keeps trucks running longer, safer, and more efficiently.

When to Schedule Service

If you notice unusual noises, visible belt wear, or if your vehicle is due for routine maintenance, it’s a good time to have your belt and tensioner inspected. Even if there are no obvious symptoms, periodic checks are a smart part of any maintenance plan.

Keep Your Truck on the Road

Belt tensioners may be out of sight, but they shouldn’t be out of mind. A quick inspection today can prevent major issues tomorrow.

Stop by Boss Truck Shop or schedule a service appointment to make sure your belts and tensioners are working the way they should—because reliable trucks start with proactive care.

Behind the Scenes of Roadside Assistance: Meet Gabrielle, Call Center Operations Manager at Boss Truck Shops

When a driver calls for roadside assistance, they need fast answers, accurate information, and someone they trust. At Boss Truck Shops, that person is often part of the call center team led by Gabrielle, our Call Center Operations Manager. She oversees the daily workflow that keeps trucks — and drivers — moving safely across the country.

What Really Happens When a Roadside Call Comes In

Most drivers don’t realize how much coordination happens behind the scenes.

“When a roadside call comes in, there are quite a few moving parts,” Gabrielle explains.

A dispatcher immediately begins:

  • Pinpointing the driver’s exact location
  • Finding the closest shop or technician
  • Checking inventory and service needs
  • Writing a complete work order
  • Dispatching a technician quickly and accurately

“Our goal is speed and 100% accuracy,” Gabrielle says. “When a driver is stressed, we want to be the steady voice that helps them through it.”

Highly Trained Dispatchers — More Than Drivers Realize

One of the biggest surprises for drivers?

“Our dispatchers spend 6–8 weeks in training before taking calls,” Gabrielle explains.
“And the trainer follows them closely for another 2–3 weeks. We become true subject matter experts.”

Dispatchers can perform everything a service adviser does — plus manage additional programs needed for roadside repairs.

“There is always a friendly, knowledgeable voice answering the phone — rain, snow, sunshine, or hail.”

What Gabrielle Loves Most About the Job

EGabrielle joined the team in July and has led significant improvements in process and workflow.

“I’m proud of my team’s adaptability. Change can be intimidating, but they’ve embraced it with grace and tenacity.”

Her passion for roadside service runs deep.

“The trucking world is unpredictable — every call is different. It’s an amazing feeling knowing you’re helping someone when they’re at their most vulnerable.”

Why the Call Center Matters

At Boss Truck Shops, roadside assistance is more than dispatching trucks — it’s about delivering speed, accuracy, and peace of mind.

“Our dispatchers have a wide variety of skills, and we take pride in getting drivers back on the road safely,” Gabrielle says.

Behind every successful roadcall is a team trained to handle anything — and dedicated to helping drivers when they need it most.

Why Antifreeze Matters: Protecting Your Engine for the Long Haul

Antifreeze is one of the most important fluids in your truck. Modern extended-life coolants can last 5 years or 500,000 miles, but only if the cooling system stays clean, balanced, and leak-free. Even long-life coolant breaks down when contaminated or diluted, putting your engine at serious risk. That’s why every driver should make battery maintenance a priority and get it checked at least once a year.

Why Antifreeze Is Essential

Your coolant system does more than prevent freezing—it keeps your engine alive by:

  • Regulating engine temperature year-round
  • Preventing corrosion and scale buildup
  • Protecting seals, gaskets, hoses, and water pumps
  • Reducing the risk of overheating and roadside breakdowns

When coolant degrades, every part of the engine is vulnerable.

The Cost of Coolant Failure

Neglected antifreeze can lead to:

  • Overheating
  • Cracked engine blocks
  • Failed radiators, water pumps, and gaskets
  • Complete engine failure

Repairs often cost thousands—plus downtime and missed loads.

How Boss Truck Shop Helps Prevent Breakdowns

Every PM service includes our 31-Point Inspection, where technicians check coolant level, condition, hoses, clamps, belts, leaks, and overall cooling system health. If needed, we can:

  • Test coolant strength
  • Correct mixture or top off
  • Perform a full coolant flush
  • Recommend the proper extended-life antifreeze

This ensures your coolant can truly reach its 5-year/500k-mile lifespan.

Stay Protected With a PM Package

Regular preventive maintenance is the most cost-effective way to avoid major engine damage. Stop into Boss Truck Shop for a PM service and cooling system check so your engine stays protected for the long haul.

Battery Maintenance: The One Check Drivers Can’t Afford to Skip

Your truck’s battery system is one of the most critical—and most overlooked—parts of preventive maintenance. While tires and mechanical failures often come to mind first, battery and electrical issues are among the leading causes of roadside breakdowns, especially with today’s emissions-driven engines and DEF systems that rely heavily on consistent power.

That’s why every driver should make battery maintenance a priority and get it checked at least once a year.

Why Battery Health Matters More Today

Modern trucks depend on clean, stable power for:

  • Emissions controls and DEF systems
  • Sensors and onboard computers
  • Starting performance in extreme weather
  • Reliable power to lights, APUs, and accessories

When batteries weaken, the entire electrical system feels it—leading to no-start situations, derates, warning lights, and unexpected downtime.

Three Battery Options for Every Truck

Boss Truck Shop proudly carries Interstate Batteries, known for durability, power, and reliability on the road. We offer three battery choices designed to fit different performance needs and budgets.  Whether you need a dependable replacement or a high-output solution, we’ve got the right battery for your rig.

Why Drivers Shouldn’t Wait

Battery issues are often the last thing drivers think about—until the truck won’t start. With rising electrical demands and emissions regulations requiring strong, steady voltage, it’s more important than ever to stay ahead of battery failure.

A quick annual check can prevent:

  • Dead batteries
  • No-start situations
  • DEF system faults
  • Costly tows and roadside downtime

Stay Road-Ready With a Battery Check

Whether you’re prepping for seasonal weather, planning a long haul, or just want peace of mind, make battery maintenance part of your PM routine. Stop by your nearest Boss Truck Shop for a fast electrical system check and dependable Interstate Battery replacement options.

Protect your uptime—power your truck with confidence.

Roadside Safety 101: What Every Driver Should Know

Your safety comes first—every mile, every call, every roadside stop. Whether you’re hauling cross-country or running regional, here’s what every driver should know to stay safe on the shoulder and beyond.

Why the Shoulder Is the Most Dangerous Place on the Highway

When a truck stops on the shoulder, the driver and the vehicle instantly become part of the traffic flow. Even with hazard lights on, visibility and space are limited. According to FMCSA and NATSO, most roadside fatalities occur on the shoulder—not the lane—making situational awareness critical.

Key facts to remember:

  • Large trucks require more space to maneuver and stop—so other motorists may misjudge your position.
  • Low light, rain, and snow reduce visibility for both you and approaching traffic.
  • Roadside service technicians face equal risk when assisting—every minute saved in exposure time counts.

If you can safely reach an exit, always do so. The safest shoulder is the one that isn’t used.

Step-by-Step Safety Checklist

If you must stop on the roadside:

  1. Signal early and slow down well before pulling off.
  2. Move to the safest possible spot—exit ramp > wide shoulder > behind guardrail.
  3. Turn on hazard lights immediately.
  4. Deploy reflective triangles or warning devices (per FMCSA 392.22: within 10 minutes, one 10 feet behind, one 100 feet behind, one 100 feet ahead).
  5. Stay in the cab unless it’s safer outside. If exiting, wear high-visibility gear and stand behind barriers.
  6. Call for assistance—provide your mile marker, direction of travel, nearest exit, and truck number.
  7. Remain alert while waiting. Even parked, your surroundings can change fast.
  8. Document the scene only if safe to do so (photos of placement, damage, or hazards).

Rules and Regulations Every Driver Should Know

FMCSA & DOT Compliance Basics

  • You are responsible for your vehicle’s safe operation under federal law.
  • Roadside inspection reports must be turned in within 24 hours of receipt.
  • Carriers must retain reports for 12 months.
  • Follow Hours-of-Service rules (11-hour max drive after 10 hours off duty).
  • Obey all state “Move Over” laws—other motorists must slow down, but your awareness keeps everyone safer.

Preventing Roadside Emergencies Before They Happen

Do the small things that prevent big breakdowns:

  • Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections—especially tires, air lines, and fluid leaks.
  • Maintain proper tire inflation and tread depth.
  • Watch for new vibrations, pulling, or air pressure drops—handle them early.
  • Keep a schedule for preventive maintenance and DOT inspections.
  • Avoid fatigue and distractions. Rested, alert drivers spot issues sooner.
  • Plan your routes—know exit spacing and rest area locations for emergency pull-offs.

Mechanical failures cause most roadside calls. Preventive maintenance keeps you on the road—and out of harm’s way.

When Help Is on the Way

Once you’ve called dispatch, your focus shifts to staying visible and secure.

While waiting for assistance:

  • Keep your hazards and warning triangles active until the technician arrives.
  • Share accurate location details (exit, direction, mile marker, truck ID).
  • Prepare helpful info: fault codes, tire sizes, make/model, symptoms.
  • Let the technician handle all roadside exposure—they’re trained and equipped with high-visibility PPE per NATSO’s Safety Initiative.

Boss Truck Shops Commitment to Safety

At Boss Truck Shops, safety isn’t a department—it’s our culture.

  • 24/7 Call Center staffed by real people who prioritize your location and safety.
  • Certified technicians trained in both tire and mechanical repairs.
  • Nationwide network to get you off the shoulder and back on the road faster.
  • One call, do it all approach: mechanical, tires, and beyond.

Quick Reference: Roadside Safety Card

Before you stop:

  • Signal and slow down
  • Pull off safely
  • Turn on hazards
  • Set warning triangles
  • Stay behind guardrail
  • Call 888-595-BOSS
  • Stay alert and document safely

The freight matters—but not more than the person behind the wheel.  Every smart decision—every safe stop, every clear call, every hazard triangle—protects not just you, but everyone on the road. Stay alert, think ahead, and remember: safety always comes first.

Mechanical or Tires? Why Not Both.

The Boss Truck Shops Difference: One Call, Do It All

When you’re broken down on the road, the last thing you need is another phone number to call.
At Boss Truck Shops, we believe roadside repair should be simple, fast, and complete—no bouncing between a tire vendor and a mechanic, no waiting on multiple dispatches.

Dealers Don’t Do Tires — Tire Shops Don’t Do Mechanics

That’s the problem most drivers run into.

  • OEM dealers can handle mechanical issues, but they usually won’t touch your tires.
  • National tire providers can swap a tire, but they don’t fix brakes, air lines, or leaks.

So when a truck has both a blown tire and a mechanical issue (which happens more often than you’d think), drivers end up calling two different vendors, paying two separate bills, and losing double the time.

One Call, Do It All

Boss Truck Shops bridges that gap.
We’re one of the few service networks that can handle both tire and mechanical repairs—from air leaks and alternators to steer tires and trailer brakes—all with a single call to 888-595-BOSS.

Here’s what that means for you:

  • Less downtime: one dispatch, one arrival, one repair.
  • Lower cost: one invoice instead of two service calls.
  • More consistency: certified technicians following the same safety and quality standards across every Boss location.
  • Nationwide network: coast-to-coast support from people who understand both systems and safety.

Because Downtime Costs More Than Repairs

Every minute you’re stopped costs money—fuel, freight schedules, hours-of-service.
That’s why our 24/7 call center is built for efficiency: one call, fast triage, and the right technician on the way.
It’s not just about fixing trucks. It’s about keeping freight, fleets, and families moving safely.

Excellence in Action: How Sioux Falls Embodies the Blue and Gold Spirit

For more than 70 years, Boss Truck Shops has delivered superior service coast to coast. At the heart of that legacy is our Blue and Gold Program—a commitment to setting the highest standards in customer care, team development, and operational excellence.

At the core of this program is our premier training hub designed to elevate every teammate to be the best of the best. With seasoned General Managers—many with over a decade of leadership—guiding the way, we’re building a culture of mentorship, pride, and performance that drives our teams forward.

One location that truly exemplifies this spirit is Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Under the leadership of Chris House, the team has cultivated a culture that feels more like family—where strong work ethic meets genuine care. Every team member takes pride in their work, ensuring drivers are taken care of quickly and efficiently, minimizing downtime and maximizing peace of mind.

Chris shared a story that perfectly captures the heart of the Sioux Falls team and the spirit of the Blue and Gold Program.

Late one weekend night, he received a call from a young woman named Marilyn, who was living the vanlife dream—traveling solo across the country in her trusted Mercedes Sprinter van. Her journey took an unexpected turn when her vehicle broke down on I-90, leaving her stranded in the dark with no repair shops or tow services answering the call.

That’s when she caught a lucky break—stumbling across the number for Boss Truck Shops in Sioux Falls. She reached out, and our night shift team immediately stepped in to help.

Though the necessary parts wouldn’t arrive until morning, teammate Aden went above and beyond. He personally drove Marilyn to a nearby hotel to ensure she had a safe and comfortable place to stay for the night. The next day, the team quickly sourced the alternator, completed the repair, and returned her to her vehicle. Marilyn later called Chris to express her heartfelt gratitude for the kindness, professionalism, and speed with which the team responded.

This wasn’t just a repair—it was a rescue. And it’s a shining example of how the Sioux Falls team lives out the values of the Blue and Gold Program every day. Their culture is built on care, pride, and a strong sense of family. Under Chris’s leadership, they’ve created an environment where teammates support one another, take pride in their work, and consistently go the extra mile for every driver who walks through their doors.

Chris summed it up best:

“One thing I’m personally proud of here is our culture. We have a great team—we’re like a family. Every team member has a strong work ethic and knows how to have fun at work.”

This is the kind of service that defines the Blue and Gold Program—where going above and beyond isn’t the exception, it’s the standard. Chris and his team have helped train and inspire others across the network, setting a tone of excellence that resonates far beyond Sioux Falls.

Superior service for 70 years and running. That’s the Boss Truck Shops way.

Team Member Spotlight: Yasmine Pearson, General Manager – Tucumcari, NM

At Boss Truck Shops, we believe that great leadership comes from dedication, resilience, and a willingness to grow. This month, we’re excited to spotlight Yasmine Pearson, General Manager of our Tucumcari, New Mexico location. Yasmine’s journey into the commercial truck repair industry is one of determination, learning, and a genuine passion for people.

From New Beginnings to General Manager

When Yasmine joined Boss Truck Shops just over two years ago, she was brand new to the commercial truck repair industry. What she lacked in technical knowledge at the start, she quickly replaced with curiosity, determination, and a strong work ethic. With the support of her trainers, mentors, and regional leadership, she steadily built her expertise and confidence.

“I didn’t search for all the right answers,” Yasmine explained. “I searched for how to find the right answers.” That mindset, combined with her natural leadership skills, helped her rise quickly—culminating in her recent promotion to General Manager.

Her story is also one of resilience. Just before she was originally hired, Yasmine suffered two unexpected brain aneurysms. Instead of losing her opportunity, the company held her position until she recovered. “That was such a green flag for me,” she shared. “It showed me the type of company Boss Truck Shops is.”

Leading with Care and Pride

For Yasmine, leadership is about celebrating the small wins and building momentum with her team. When her shop went through a period without a manager, she naturally stepped in to provide structure and support, even before she officially earned the title.

She’s especially proud of how her team has grown in areas like acceptance rates and road calls. “We’re not where we want to be yet, but we’ve come so far in just a few months. Seeing the team buy in and improve together has been really rewarding.”

When asked to describe her shop, Yasmine didn’t hesitate: “We care. My technicians put pride into their work, and we make sure every customer gets the service and respect they deserve.”

Going the Extra Mile for Drivers

Located in a remote stretch of New Mexico, the Tucumcari shop often serves as a lifeline for drivers far from dealerships or major services. Yasmine and her team don’t stop at truck repair—they’ll even help drivers get to hotels, grab a ride into town, or fuel up when they’re stranded.

“It’s important to us that no driver feels stuck. We’ll do what we can to make sure they’re taken care of,” Yasmine said.

Lessons Learned and Looking Ahead

One of Yasmine’s biggest takeaways from working with professional drivers is respect. “I didn’t always realize how much they sacrifice,” she reflected. “Now I see the hours, the dedication, and everything they go through. I respect them so much more.”

Looking ahead, Yasmine has ambitious goals for her shop—expanding service offerings beyond oil changes and tires, stocking more tools and parts, and building a stronger customer base. She knows it won’t be easy, but she’s confident in her team’s ability to keep growing.

Her advice to anyone starting their career at Boss Truck Shops? “Never feel defeated by not knowing something. You’ll always be learning. Listen to your technicians, listen to your team—there’s so much knowledge to absorb if you’re willing to ask questions.”

We’re proud to have Yasmine Pearson as part of the Boss Truck Shop family. Her journey is proof that with resilience, teamwork, and passion for learning, anything is possible.
