Winter-Ready: Your Truck Maintenance Checklist for Cold Snaps, Chain Laws & Fuel Protection

As the seasons shift and temperatures drop, winter driving brings a new set of challenges for commercial drivers. From fuel gelling to chain law fines, preparation is key to keeping your rig rolling safely and legally. At Boss Truck Shops, we’re here to help you stay road-ready with expert tips, essential services, and limited-time savings.

Fuel Smart: Protect Your Diesel from the Cold

Diesel fuel begins to gel around 15°F, causing clogged filters and stalled engines. The best defense? Proactive fuel treatment.

Top Tips for Diesel Fuel Protection

Treat early: Add fuel treatment before temperatures drop below the cloud point (around 32°F).
Use every fill-up: Add before fueling to ensure proper mixing.
Carry an emergency additive: Products like Diesel 911 can reliquefy gelled fuel and de-ice frozen filters.
Avoid idling: Driving warms the engine more effectively than idling.
Drain air tanks daily: Prevent frozen moisture from damaging your fuel system.

Boss Truck Shops carry Howes Diesel Treat and Diesel 911—stock up before the next cold snap hits.

Chain Law Essentials Every Driver Should Know

Chain laws vary by state, and fines for non-compliance can reach $1,000+. Here’s what’s new and important this season:

Colorado

  • Chains required Sept 1–May 31 on I-70 between Golden and Dotsero.
  • Level 1: Single-axle combos must chain all four drive tires.
  • Level 2: All commercial vehicles must chain all four drive tires.
  • Fines range from $50 to $1,000, depending on violation severity.

California

  • Up to 8 chains may be required for standard tractor-trailers.
  • Watch for chain control signs:
    • R1: Chains or snow tires on drive axle.
    • R2: Chains on all vehicles except AWD with snow tires.
    • R3: Chains required on all vehicles, no exceptions.

Washington

  • Chains must be carried Nov 1–Apr 1 on designated mountain routes.
  • Applies to vehicles over 10,000 lbs GVWR.

Oregon

  • Truckers must carry 6 chains and follow posted traction control signs.

Wyoming

  • Level 1: Chains or snow tires required.
  • Level 2: Chains or AWD with snow-rated tires required.
  • Fines up to $750 if violations cause highway closures.

 Chain Placement Tips

  • Duals: Chains go on the outer tires of the drive axle.
  • Wide base tires: Use chains designed for single wide tires.
  • EZ Sox: A fast-install alternative for light snow—available at select locations.

Before the first freeze, make sure your truck is ready:
